The History of the Edinburgh Christmas Walk

in November of 1967 Terry Crossley (event organiser) was serving in the Royal Navy as a Physical Training Instructor when his ship visited South Africa. He took part in the 'The Big Walk' from Simonstown to Cape Town, a distance of 22 miles and was so impressed by the The start of one of the first walksevent that when he settled down in Edinburgh the following year, he thought the South African walk was just right for Edinburgh.

With sponsorship from the Edinburgh Evening News, the very first Edinburgh Christmast Walk was held from Usher Hall out to the old Edinburgh Airport and back, on Sunday 22nd December 1968. The walk attracted several hundred entries and raised over £500 for the British Heart Foundation.

In 1970 the walk moved to the then new Meadowbank Stadium and for the next 27 years An early Awards Ceremonybecame known as the Evening News Charity Walk and over the years raised over £1 million for Edinburgh charities. The last Evening News Walk was in 1995.

In 1998 Terry originated and organised the first Great Scottish Walk which has raised in excess fo £6 million, over the past ten years.

Now retired from organising The Great Scottish Walk he is enjoying organising this years 40th Anniversary Christmas Walk. So why not join Terry, his family, his friends and lets make this a walk to remember.
